Diabetes (type 2) is curable

Recently I was in fierce debate with a bunch of folks on this subject -- that Diabetes is reversible/curable. If you're diabetic, it is not the end of the world!

Well, as I've always mentioned, I'm not a doctor (or anything close to have any professional medical background), but I do read stuff on this subject (a lot!), and sharing from my personal experiences.

To me, diabetes is a lifestyle illness. Meaning, whatever your lifestyle is right now, it's sucks, and it's killing you (with diabetes). And I know most of you diabetes sufferer out there, this is not new, you know this. The thing is, instead of procrastinate, why can't you just change the poor lifestyle into a better one?? Lead a healthy lifestyle for say just a 3-months period, and then decide. The proof is in the pudding !!

Once you've fixed your diabetic condition (of poor insulin resistance), and you're already lead a active lifestyle, it's ok to sometimes indulge! you've to earn it.

No one else can do this for you, it's all up to you. You're 100% responsible (and stop blaming others/environment/genes.... pls).

See my earlier post on these subjects

Diabetic + Obesity = Diabesity !!

or any of my earlier post that has mentioned diabetes.

Got problem with your Uric Acid level? Fruit Juices may be the culprit!

Recently, I've bumped into yet another article saying how bad fruit juices are to our health. This article is written by a medical doctor (Dr. Richard Johnson) who has vast experience in the subject, his claims backed by his scientific research! See the interview by Dr. Mercola with Dr. Richard.

Interestingly, he pointed a fact that if you've problem with high uric acid levels (esp. gout sufferers), you should checked your sensitivity towards fructose (the sugar in fruits). His research actually shows that high uric acid levels increase the risk of diabetes, high-blood pressure, kidney diseases and obesity.... and fructose are one of the major culprit!!!

Well, I'm not a doctor, I don't know if what Dr. Richard say it's true, but I tend to agree based on my personal experiences. I used to have gout back then, my uric acid level was waaaayyy above the limit, and after I've cleaned my diet and exercise, my uric acid level are now at a normal level -- yup one of it, I've stayed away from fruit juices a long time ago. See my earlier post on some of the figures.

Bottom line: based on scientific research, fruit juices is not as healthy as all of us think. Take it sparingly, treat is as indulgences (as in ice-cream, cakes, etc.. you can take it once a while). Best if you can avoid it altogether. If you're thirsty, grab a bottle of water, you'll be better off healthwise.

Check my earlier post on this subject... To Juice or Not to Juice..

Sweet Poison

Hey all.

I got this below message in my email Inbox and thought it's good to share to you all. If you've been following my blog here, I'm sure you'll not be surprised in any of those (but sometime we all need reminders).

Our body doesn't need the added table sugar (sucrose & glucose) you've put into our meals or drinks (don't let me start on the evil super-sugar!). Sugar should comes from it's original form (fruits, veggies, etc) - sugar from fruits are mostly fructose, if you blend them and drinks fruit juices, it would be as bad as taking the table sugar. So stop thinking having fruit juices is good for you.. it does not! see my old post on that.

Having said all that - sugar in our body, to be specific, glucose, is an extremely important component. Our body converts glucose into energy that we use. If not because of the glucose (which most food we digest been converted into), we can't move any of our limps!

Our body uses glucose from the food we need to convert into energy. Guess what if all of those sugar we eat, and it's not being use?... yup.. it will be stored for later use... stored as what?.. yup.. FAT! -- ever wonder why people say sugar (and all the food loaded with it) makes you fat?.... wonder no more.

SWEET POISON!
ASPARTAME IN DIET COKE, PEPSI & OTHERS- A  MUST READ!

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick.

She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around.
Walking was a major chore.
It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain...

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications.

The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her.
She was in so much pain, and so sick she just knew she was dying.

She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.

She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19 I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.

I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda?
She told me that she did.
As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.

I told her not to open it, and to stop drinking the diet soda!

I e-mailed her article my friend, a lawyer, had sent.
My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk!
The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but, she sure felt a lot better.

She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.

Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed!

He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind.
In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda...and literally dying a slow and miserable death.

When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning!

She is well on her way to a complete recovery.
And she is walking!

No wheelchair!

This article saved her life.
If it says 'SUGAR FREE' on the label;

DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as
'Nutra Sweet,'
 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'

In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant.
I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.
I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous:

When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants.
The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus.

Many people were being diagnosed in error.
Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!

Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with
Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers.

The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit.
He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition.
We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.

In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly.

This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia.

During a lecture, I said,
'If you are using ASPARTAME (Nutra Sweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs,
Cramps,
Vertigo,
Dizziness,
Headaches,
Tinnitus,
Joint pain,
Unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!'
People were jumping up during the lecture saying,

'I have some of these symptoms..
Is it reversible?'

Yes!

Yes!
Yes!
STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels!
Many products are fortified with it!
This is a serious problem.
Dr. Espart (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice; a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!

Diet soda is
NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates.

It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!

These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs.
Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin and is used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.'

Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!

Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the 'diet products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.

Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics.

We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame.
The Aspartame drives the blood sugar out of control.
Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.

Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE.

Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage,
Seizures,
Depression,
Manic depression,
Panic attacks,
Uncontrollable anger and rage.

Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well.

Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behaviour when these chemicals have been removed from their diet.

So called 'behaviour modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed.
Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place!

Most of these children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'

It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of
diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the   well-known Gulf War Syndrome.

Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e. mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy.

Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.

There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'

Herein lies the problem:

There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included in 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still nothing has been done.
The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.

Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED!

There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be thousands more introduced.
Everybody wants a 'piece of the Aspartame pie.'

I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.

And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes   Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians?

This has been recently exposed in the New York Times.
These [organizations] cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.

Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children and infants.

The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioural symptoms.

The bill was killed.

It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Well, you're informed now!

Diabetic + Obesity = Diabesity !!

Recently, I had a pleasure reading and view an excellent new blog post from my defacto nutrition guru, Dr Mark Hyman. Doc Hyman is no stranger to me (I've started my new lifestyle after I read his bestseller Ultrametabolism book back in 2007 - see my earlier post on this).. and the book is still relevant till today, and followed by his ever popular blog posts).
In his recent blog post, he basically re-affirms the message that he has always preached, but slightly in a new twist and updated facts.

He talked about how people with diabetes type 2 can reverse the disease. How about that?!!!
He went into detail talking about the new buzz-word - Diabesity, the term that was originally coined by Shape Up America, Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop Foundation. How our modern 'convenient' lifestyles created this epidemic, and worst, our modern medicine practice just way off track in treating the symptoms.

Wonder what it is all about? Put your speaker on, and view his video.

Here's Part 2 of the above video. Doc elaborated the facts that diabetic is neither hereditary nor genetic disorder, it is a direct outcome of dietary and lifestyle factors turning on all the wrong genes that we've complete control over. Excellent stuff.

If you've not read his UltraMetabolism book, I highly recommended it. It teaches you to know your body better, and how food interacts with you genes - so you know what to put into your body. Use food as the medicine to heal your body (see my earlier post on that).
You can easily find the book in local bookstores - MPH, Kinokuniya, Borders - I've seen them myself... don't walk, run to get it (and burn more calories ;)

to your good health,
Sher Khan.

Give yourself a metabolic tune-up!

Hi all,

I've talked about mitochondria and the importance of it here before (see my old post on it). It's the key to control our metabolism...

Just saw an excellent article on this by Dr. Mark Hyman... and he actually sums up exactly how I've been doing my exercises and nutrition. (refer to my old post - What kind of Diet Are You On?)

Here's it goes (cut & paste it for your enjoyment)

------------------------------------------------------------

How to Give Yourself a Metabolic Tune-up

Are you tired and worn out?

Do you have sore muscles, fatigue, and brain fog?

If so, you might have metabolic burnout!

Imagine if you could find a way to tune up your metabolism, increase your energy levels, think clearly, and feel less achy.

Imagine if you could prevent diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.

Imagine if you could heal fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Imagine if you could get to the roots of aging, slow the whole process, and eliminate most age-related diseases.

These aren’t just fantasies.

All these things are possible—if you give yourself a metabolic tune up.

You might have heard of the rats fed high doses of resveratrol, the plant compound found in red wine. But did you know that those rats lived 30 percent longer than their peers – the equivalent of an additional 120 human years -- even though they ate a bad diet.

In fact, they became fitter and lost weight even while eating a poor-quality, standard American diet.

How could they eat high amounts of bad food and not exercise, yet still become fitter, AND live 30 percent longer than the average rat?

One word: MITOCHONDRIA -- the source of your energy.

The resveratrol protected and improved the function of the mitochondria through its effects on special master-aging genes.

So what are mitochondria and what do they have to do with having more energy, losing weight, and living to be 120 years old without any disease?

Today you will learn the answer to that question. And I will provide you with 8 tips you can start using today to give yourself a metabolic tune-up and boost your energy metabolism.

The key to more energy lies in providing your mitochondria the right environment to thrive. When you do, you can boost your energy metabolism. Doing this is the 6th of the 7 keys to UltraWellness, and it is absolutely essential if you want to obtain optimal health.

So let’s look at what mitochondria are and what they do.

What Are Mitochondria?

Mitochondria are the little factories in our cells that take the foods we eat and the oxygen we breathe and convert them into energy. That energy is called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, and it is used to support every function in our body.

Each cell holds hundreds or thousands of mitochondria; they are found in greater amounts in active organs and tissues such as the muscles, heart, and brain. In fact, we have more than 100,000 trillion mitochondria in our bodies, and each one contains 17,000 little assembly lines for making ATP.

Why are these are these little energy factories so important to your health?

The answer is simple: Mitochondria are the place where metabolism happens.

When your mitochondria aren’t working properly, your metabolism runs less efficiently or can practically shut down.

Problems occur because these powerful energy producers are VERY sensitive to damage.

And when they are damaged, you suffer all the symptoms of low energy—fatigue, memory loss, pain, rapid aging, and more.

Fatigue is the most common symptom of poorly functioning mitochondria, and it is the reason we tend to poop out as we age. We add constant insult and injury to our mitochondria, and this causes them to break down and stop producing energy.

The main way your mitochondria are damaged is by uncontrolled oxidative stress. That may sound complicated, but in reality we are all familiar with “oxidative stress” even if some of us don’t know what the term means.

Oxidation is the rust on our cars, the brown color that appears on an apple when cut and exposed to air, the rancid vegetable oil in our cupboards, even the wrinkles that form on our skin.

What most of us don’t realize is that our own tissues are rusting, our own fats are going rancid, and our brains are melting as we go about our daily life.

What starts this process is some insult—too many calories, smoking, a sunburn, exposure to toxins, anti-nutrients, sugar, and more—that tips the balance, starting a chain reaction of cellular and tissue damage that leads us down the long road to weight gain and chronic illness.

The ultimate outcome of oxidative stress and the resultant loss of energy is death!

But the good news is that we can counteract the damage by giving ourselves a metabolic tune-up.

Let me explain ...

What Is a Metabolic Tune-up?

Dr. Bruce Ames, a renowned scientist from the University of California, Berkeley, has spent the last decade discovering how we can give ourselves a metabolic tune-up.

In one study, he gave two compounds to old rats who were tired, wouldn’t get on their treadmill or swim very far, and couldn’t find the cheese in the maze. These compounds make mitochondria run better, boosting metabolism.

They are alpha-lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine.

Overnight, these old rats became young rats. They got onto the treadmill, swam long distances without fatigue, and could easily find the cheese in the maze, just like their young, healthy counterparts.

How could that happen?

Well, Dr. Ames simply gave the cells the raw materials they need for optimal function. That’s it!

You can do this too, and the process is very simple ...

First, find the things that damage your metabolism and mitochondria, then eliminate them.

Second, give your body the things that help mitochondria function optimally.

Here’s how you do that.

8 Tips for Giving Yourself a Metabolic Tune-up

The first step to giving yourself a metabolic tune-up is locating and eliminating the causes of damage to the mitochondria:

    • Eat less processed food, junk food, sugar, and empty calories. In fact, you should really avoid these things altogether.

    • Detoxify by getting rid of environmental and internal toxins.

    • Cool off the inflammation in your body.

    • Balance your hormones.

Once you’ve done that, you need to boost your mitochondrial function and provide the mitochondria with the correct environment to thrive:

    • Try interval training, which increases the efficiency and function of your mitochondria, and strength training, which increases the amount of muscle and the number of mitochondria.

    • Eat whole, real, colorful plant food. That’s eight to 12 servings of fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains every day. These foods are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients.

    • Take mitochondria-protective and energy-boosting nutrients such as acetyl-L-carnitine, alpha-lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, N-acetyl-cysteine, NADH, D-ribose, resveratrol, and magnesium aspartate.

    • Increase your intake of omega-3 fats to help build your mitochondrial membranes.

Taking care of your mitochondria and giving yourself a metabolic tune-up will allow you to increase your energy, lose weight, and age well. It is a cornerstone of creating lifelong vibrant health.

To your good health,

Mark Hyman, M.D.

Bread - sabotaging your diet?

Do you know that wheat and wheat products (bread, wheat flour, pasta, wheat cereals, what ever product that list wheat or flour as an ingredient) are the type of foods that can really cause a sudden increase in blood sugar?.. hence I've been avoiding them to close about 2 years now, and been taking 'whole wheat' kind of breads, and it's the best way to maintain our health?

Yes and No.

Yes - we need to take whole-grains into our diet to increase the amount of fiber you take and the benefits of 'whole-grains' itself - from the bran-endosperm-to-the germ (as opposed to the refined white flour that is mainly starch from the endosperm). Being 'paranoia' as I am - i don't even want to take the normal whole-wheat bread on the local baked shelf because if you were to look at the ingredient (see for your self, some of popular local brands - like hi-five, gardenia, etc). Take a look at the ingredient list, and you know why. Hence, I baked my own 100% whole wheat, and has been perfecting it now.. (hmmm I can still smell the bread off the hot oven.. heavenly!)

Having said that, I've discovered recently that wheat (even whole wheat) is one of the substance that people are allergic to it - normally to the special protein inside it, known as gluten. That typically creates blemishes and acne on the skin (due to the high insulin secretion to balance off the high glucose in the body).

I've also realised that flour and flour products are still processed food (even whole wheat). We're better off eating brown rice (closer to it's original form), and obviously other fruits and vegetables.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a fan of bread. I love whole-wheat bread (took me months to perfected my own recipe) - just love the taste of it, topped with peanut butter, and dash of raisins and sunflower seeds.. yummy!

The problem is - even if it's whole wheat - you tend to eat more than 2 slices sometimes (that is a lot - considering it's affect on your blood sugar). It will definitely sabotaging your diet. carb-overload!

If you've been dieting, and you're hitting the plateau - I suggest you look at your bread consumption. Hey - I'm not saying to never have bread again (it's life, you got to enjoy it rite?), just that I think we need to control it better - people are taking too much bread (especially the white kind - from the normal sandwich bread to naan bread to pastries to donuts to cakes). People are taking in 4-5 servings of some kind of bread type product every day that makes them gain weight. It prevents people from losing their unwanted weight, and worst, bringing about some diseases like heart diseases and type 2 diabetes.

I've been testing this on myself - it has been close to 2 months now that I've stayed away from flour and flour products (even whole-wheat)... and I tell you.. I feel lighter.. my skins getting clearer.. and the best thing is.. the scale is moving downwards consistently!!

I know, it's not easy.. believe me. Yup I've even missed my bread making session - the kneading is so therapeutic!

With no bread around - I tend to take more oats, yogurt, brown rice, and fruits for breakfast (see my typical breakfast), and of course, my new juicing adventures.

what have you discover recently???

to your good health,
Sher Khan.

some questions, and tips..

hi.. had an email chat with some colleagues, and I thought, to share with you all..

-----------------

Bros.. to start.. don’t do drastically.. would be difficult.. then you’ll turn-off, at the end.. failed miserably... do something you can stay for long-term.. it’s a lifestyle change really… focus on leading a healthier life (by eating healthily and do regular exercise).. the losing of weight/tummy shall come naturally…

To stop the intake of rice just like that can be tough, and by replacing it with whole meal bread won’t help as much (if you take more than 2)– still glycemic load is way too high – need to regulate your insulin level much better.

I suggest, to start, you still take the rice, but.. small portion. As a rule, always divide  your plate into 4 quarters – rice, veggie, chicken/fish, fruit/veggie.

No second helping pls… portion control is a must.. best if you can change the white rice into brown rice (refined into complex)..  so you shall feel full longer… it helps with that hunger pangs. Do eat 5 mini meals a day, not the typical 3 big meals (it shall rev up your metabolism – the key to weight loss!)

Having said that - the most important is to make progress – in yr case, instead of everyday and every meal you take rice, try this - today no rice for dinner, but esok like usual, then.. slowly move into selang sehari.. today rice, tomorrow no rice, etc.. this week 5 times, next week 4 times, so on.. adding new food into your menu that is high in its nutritional value, and dropping the bad ones…  The key is progress… if you’re really serious, please have a log of what you’re eating daily (no cheating here – be honest). After a few days, you can revisit what you’ve eaten (and what you should have avoided).. then make that progress..  it’s a lifestyle change.. (share with me your log, I can assist you to improve what you’re eating).

Also, keep note on your weight every other week (have a log also) – timbang at the same place, same time (lepas subuh before breakfast – in your birthday suit). The timbang log and the food log are the records that motivates you to improves yourself as you go along.. the challenge is all within yourself. Bak kata Sir Edmund Hillary -  "It's not the mountain we conquer but ourselves."

Don’t starve yourself. It shall slow down your metabolism – eat something every 3-4 hours (hence you keep seeing me eating fruits or nuts.. right?), and drink LOTS of plain water.

Btw, go slow on the fruits.. too much fruits is not good also.. too high in fructose.. leads to weight gain (fructose doesn’t metabolise as efficient as glucose for energy). Need to avoid certain fruits for now.. very sweet ones like watermelon .. need to normalise your insulin level first… so it won’t hit you with that binge, that increases your appetite level..

Whatever it is.. the key is moderation.. and like nabi said.. stop eating before kenyang.. it’s all true.

Exercise? It’s important, but to me, you need to start by improving your eating habit first – then we talk about exercise.

Ok bros.. all the best..!!

Ps: I use online BMI calculator to check mine.. normal bmi is between 18.5 to 24.9. But then again, sometime people can be within the ‘normal’ bmi, but other vital health signs, like the lipid profile is all borderline cases or even high-risk level.. so kena jaga la… so that you’re free from health risk (heart attack, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, etc) – the most common diseases and killer!

Eh.. panjang pulak tulis..  sorry.. a bit passionate on this subject these days.. let’s do lunch.. can talk further.

the 2 evil foods - pls avoid them!

I want to touch on a subject that I've been talking on this blog for a while now - but it seems people still just don't get it!

Let me say it again here - the 2 most evil foods in our food supply are:

1. Trans Fat - aka the ugly fat
2. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) - aka supersugar

Try as much as you can to avoid these evil foods (I said try is because I know for a fact it is difficult - this stuff is so abundancely found in our foods these days).

So, what are these 2 stuff.. and why I called them evils?

If you're really concern about your health, and especially to reduce your ever expanding waist. Please please please do some readings on these 2 evil stuff.

Do a search on Uncle Google, and you'll get to see tons of info on them. Facts after facts, study after study has proof that it's evil. The info is a LOT, that you're better off reading them from the sites, rather than me trying to explain them here.

Then, after you've read them. You'll understand why I keep myself away as much as possible from processed food, and focusing on a more natural real whole food way of eating.

Ok ok, I know doing Uncle Google can overwhelmed you sometimes..  So here's I'm cutting and pasting a good article for your reading pleasure...

this is a note on HFCS... from Men's Health website.
--------------

Here's how this little bugger was born: About 30 years ago, food manufacturers figured out that they could make sodas, cereals, yogurts, and some 40,000 other manufactured foods taste sweeter -- for a lot less money than with simple sugar. They did it by developing HFCS (which is derived from corn).

Sounds fine in theory, but here's the problem: When you eat any type of carbohydrate (like bread or fruit), your body releases insulin to regulate your body weight, pushing those carb calories into your muscles to be used as energy or storing them for later. Then it suppresses your appetite. Those carbs are the signal for you to stop filling your tank.

But HFCS doesn't stimulate insulin, so your body doesn't register it the way it registers simple white sugar. (That's why you can drink a few Big Gulps and never really feel full.) So what are you left with? You eat the HFCS-containing foods that are high in calories, but, like a band that stops after one set, those foods leave you wanting more. So you eat more foods with HFCS, stockpiling those calories like they're savings bonds, and the cycle of eating -- and storing fat -- continues.

Today, you can find HFCS in things like ketchup, pasta sauce, and crackers -- it's everywhere. Now, you don't need to eliminate it completely (though that's the ideal), but you do need to treat it like a manipulative ex and find ways to kick it out of your life.

here's on Trans Fat...

--------------

"Trans fats" may sound like the name of a cross-dressing pool hustler, but the reality is even more bizarre. Artificially made fats, trans fats are like wigs in shower drains -- mammoth cloggers. They gunk up the works by increasing the amount of bad cholesterol in your body. (Trans fats have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.)

You can understand why when you realize how they're made. Trans fats are created by combining vegetable oil (a liquid) with hydrogen to create partially hydrogenated oil, or trans fatty acids. Once infused with the hydrogen, the liquid vegetable oil turns into a solid at room temperature.

And the food industry loves trans fats, because they are cheap and seem to stick around forever. Plus, you can add trans fats to all kinds of foods in a way you can't add regular oil (for instance, normal vegetable oil in a cookie recipe would ooze out when the weather gets warm; with trans fats, the treats stay crisp and solid). So now trans fats -- like HFCS -- get added to chips, fries, muffins, and all sorts of on-the-shelf products.

But the real evil is what trans fat does to you on the inside. Remember, these fats are supposed to be liquid but have turned into solid. So instead of melting, like they would in their natural state, inside your body, they try to revert to their waxy, solid makeup -- inside your arteries.

Tips: Scan the label and eliminate. Like hotel bars on business trips, little good can come from them. Some tips for total avoidance:

• Check ingredients lists for aliases like "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated." The higher these ingredients are on the label, the more trans fats they contain.

• Pick high-protein breakfasts like eggs and Canadian bacon over waffles. If you have toast, skip the margarine. Processed bread products and margarine are two of the most common forms in which trans fats find their way into our bodies.

• At a restaurant, ask what kind of oil the chef uses. You want to hear olive oil, not shortening (another code name for the transfat).

• When eating out, stick to soup or salad and avoid the bread, which can be filled with trans fats.

Rejuvenated!

I just had my medical check-up done few days back, and frankly I was a bit worried for this check-up. Worried because the last check-up I did was about 6 months ago (the longest period in between the checks since I started this journey), and I don't know what would my results be. I know I've been good, but yeah.. occasionally, I did slip up.. missed my exercises and gobble-up more than I should... worst, I just came back from a 4 days company retreat (means lotsa hotel buffet spread!.. how could one resist!).

Anyway, gotten the results, met the wellness doctor, let's just say, I'm overwhelmed!!
The doc actually said, 'Sher, you're now free from any health risk, you've rejuvenated yourself!'

I seek further clarification, wanting to know what she actually meant. She said, just look at your vital signs. The records tells the histories, about 1+ years ago, you're pretty much considered as a 'high-risk' or 'borderline' in terms of the medical risk of getting myriads of diseases especially related to diabetes and hearts diseases (stroke, hypertension, heart attack!). Today, your vital signs tells me that you're very well within the desired range, and I can safely say, you're at a perfect health!

Last Feb 2007, I've set myself to seek a healthier life, and I guess I did it!

I've achieved my goal!

Now, let's take a look at the results:

My Blood Sugar level was originally at 5.8, and now hovering around 4.9-5.1
My Total Cholesterol was originally at 5.45mmol/L, now at 3.4
My Triglycerides was originally at .39mmol/L, now at .28
My HDL was originally at 1.13mmol/L, now at a whopping 2.09!!!
My LDL was originally at 2.8mmol/L, now down to 1.2!!!
My uric acid level was originally at 487, now at 375!!
My Blood Pressure was originally at 122/84, now at 103/56.
My BMI was originally at 45.7, now at 24.5.

Like I said over and over again, losing weight is just the side effect of trying to be healthy. Focus on leading a healthy life (eat right, drink right, plus do regular exercise). Check the rest of this blog, I've pretty much documented my journey to share with all of you out there. If you've questions, feel free to drop me a line. Good luck!

So, what's next? lots of people has been asking.

let's do it in the next post ;)

be healthy!

Now I know your secret.. you don't eat rice..!

That's the common perception everytime my colleague at work commented when they saw me having lunch. I do eat rice, but not white rice - I eat brown rice.. I eat whole grains only... 'oh, you mean that diabetic rice ah?' - the friend would commented.. well, if we've a lot of time to spare, I'd share the reason behind it. For a quick read, just do a quick search on google on the health benefits of brown rice - and you'll understand why.

Then followed by.. 'But Sher, brown rice expensive lah.. 5kg pack is about RM25-32 (depending on brand), as compared to white rite 10kg pack is about RM13-19.. crazy ah.. i can't afford it, furthermore, not tasty lah..and smelly'.

These days, I see food as a medicine. Everything I eat, I make sure I choose the one with the highest nutritional value... and try my best to avoid the ones that has none whatsoever (yup, those potato chips, soft-drinks, ice-cream, fast-foods!). I choose food that is high in antioxidant, good fats, & protein. I watch the overall glycemic load of my meals, and focusing on food that is high in phytonutrient, with low-glycemic index rating.
At the end, I don't have to spend extra money on supplements, medicine, or worst - a 'diet mix' or 'diet concoction'. The best thing is - the entire family can enjoy these healthy lifestyle - not just you with your 'diet smoothies', while the rest, continue munching on some processed-empty-calorie-junk-food. (we shouldn't call it food at all, it's junk. period.)

'Sher, this sound way too complicated, don't think it's for me'. I may have scared you, but for the past 1 year, I've been doing quite a bit of reading on the foods we eat. I've tried and tested many variations, and I've found that the way of eating that is based on a whole foods diet that's high in fiber, rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, and low in sugars and flours, with a low glycemic load.. is the ultimate key in my fat loss.

It is a way of eating that includes anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying foods. It includes plenty of omega-3 fats and olive oil, soy products, beans, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins. All these foods help in automatic weight loss. This is the way of eating that turns on all the right gene messages, promotes a healthy metabolism, and hopefully prevents diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer!

till next time.. stay lean, and don't be lazy to exercise!
